Elizabethtown College Associate Professor of Biology David Bowne recently had his essay, “Pollination is Perversion” published in the digital literary magazine, The Thieving Magpie.

“Among the general public, the concept of pollination is widely known but less developed is an understanding of what pollination is and what it accomplishes,” Dr. Bowne said. “I hope readers are amused, educated, and gain a greater appreciation for pollination.”

Through his work as an ecological scientist, Dr. Bowne’s essay, along with most of his creative writing, was inspired by interactions between organisms. Dr. Bowne explores the “weirdness and wonder” of pollination, being a common but strange interaction between plants and animals.

Aiming to shine light on what pollination is and why it is important in a creative way, Dr. Bowne also hopes readers are amused by his playful take on those who would impose morality on biological processes.
