Sixteen Etown students, as well as four faculty and staff members, were inducted into Tri-Alpha, or Alpha Alpha Alpha, a national honor society for first-generation college students started at Moravian University in 2018.
The students were honored for their dedication to academic excellence amid the challenges that arise from being the first in their families to obtain a higher-education degree.
“Tri-Alpha represents the resilience and determination it takes to navigate college as a first-generation student,” Social Studies Education major and Tri-Alpha Inductee Brooke Floyd ’28 said. “This recognition reminds me of how far I’ve come and encourages me to stay engaged, support others with similar experiences, and make the most of my college journey.”
The 51 graduating seniors in Etown’s Momentum Program, a program that supports first-generation and Pell-eligible students with resources and support to ease the college transition process, were also honored at the event.
Senior Director of the Institute for Engagement, Mission, and Impact Javita Thompson delivered the evening’s opening remarks, followed by a Q&A session facilitated by Biology major and Kinesis Mentor Kenzie Laity ’27.
Senior members of Momentum’s Kinesis mentor team, who provide weekly peer mentoring to first-year Momentum students, also shared reflections about their journeys as first-generation college students.
“The Momentum Program was the catalyst for helping me discover my interests and find the right path through and after college,” Samantha Small ’26 said. “As a Kinesis mentor, I’ve learned how much I enjoy working with students to help them set and achieve academic goals.”
