Elizabethtown College hosted its annual spring Day of Service on Friday, March 22, partnering with Unto, a local humanitarian organization. More than 225 Blue Jay students, faculty, staff, and alumni gave back to the community by packing 45,000 rice and lentil meals that will be sent to families experiencing food insecurity.

“I always look forward to this time of year, when our entire Elizabethtown College community comes together to live out our institution’s Educate for Service motto and give back to the community,” Director of the Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE) Javita Thompson said.

Four, one-hour and 15-minute sessions were held for Blue Jays to pack meals, each of which will provide families with a month’s supply of food through Unto. Unto ships humanitarian aid resources to its partners, which include over 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia.

The event was organized by the CCCE in partnership with additional campus offices such as the Center for Global Understanding and Peacemaking, the School of Public Service, Student Assembly, and the Social Work Department.

The annual Day of Service exemplifies the College’s Educate for Service motto, guiding each of its students to make intentional action to make positive impacts on the lives of others. A campus-wide commitment to service is found through academic research, service trips around the world, and local, community-based projects.
