Elizabethtown College students, Emely Guevara ’25 and Elsa Woodarek ’26, recently attended the National Education for Women’s (NEW) Leadership Pennsylvania Summer Institute in June.
The NEW Leadership Pennsylvania, hosted by The Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics at Chatham University, is a six-day intensive, non-partisan, institute designed to educate and empower young women for future political engagement and leadership. Approximately 35 students from across Pennsylvania are selected to attend the institute each year.
“I took away a new motivation to pursue a political career and left energized to bring about positive change among my community,” Elsa Woodarek, a Public Health and Political Science double major, and Philosophy minor, said. “I also left with new friendships and connections among women in the political space. This truly was an educational and energizing experience that I am so grateful to have attended.”
While at the institute, students learned about political engagement at the local level in Pennsylvania, leadership development, diversity training, and policy making.
Students also had the opportunity to hear from multiple inspirational speakers such as Marita Garrett, former mayor of Wilkinsburg Borough; Joanna McClinton, speaker of the PA State House of Representatives; and Dr. Dana Brown, Director of the PCWP and Political Science professor at Chatham University.
