{"id":11873,"date":"2022-05-06T13:13:03","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T17:13:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.etown.edu\/?p=11873"},"modified":"2022-05-06T13:13:03","modified_gmt":"2022-05-06T17:13:03","slug":"elizabethtown-college-professor-presents-research-on-nsf-sponsored-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.etown.edu\/index.php\/2022\/05\/06\/elizabethtown-college-professor-presents-research-on-nsf-sponsored-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Elizabethtown College Professor Presents Research on NSF-Sponsored Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Elizabethtown College Associate Professor of Mathematics Leyla Batakci recently presented her research, \u201cMeasuring Student, Instructor Attitudes and the Learning Environment,\u201d at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/sigmaa-rume\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2022 Conference on Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education (RUME)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in February.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Batakci and her research team are examining student and faculty motivation in teaching and learning statistics and data science. The research, which is sponsored through a National Science Foundation (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NSF) Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) grant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has been presented at multiple national conferences<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAttitudes matter in mathematics education, especially in fields like statistics which sometimes suffer from a poor reputation,\u201d Batakci said. \u201cUnderstanding the relationship between both student and instructor attitudes and student achievement is crucial for improving mathematics education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur research team is developing a new set of attitudinal instruments, the Student and Instructor Surveys of Motivational Attitudes toward Statistics (S- and I-SOMAS), to quantify these attitudes.
