Nearly 50 Local High School Students Will Participate in Hands-on Chemistry Activities
Elizabethtown College’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will host nearly 50 local high school students for the second annual Chem-a-Thon event on Friday, April 4 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
“We are excited to be able to host our second annual Chem-a-thon event this year that includes a great mix of students from local high schools,” Elizabethtown College Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Amy Defnet said. “We hope this event will generate excitement around the field of chemistry and encourage students to consider scientific careers as they determine what they want to pursue after high school and beyond.”
The event will feature students from seven local high schools (Annville Cleona High School, Elizabethtown Area High School, Linden School for Girls, Manheim Central High School, Muhlenberg High School, Solanco High School, and Warwick High School) participating in engaging, hands-on laboratory activities using college-level techniques through the instruction of Etown faculty and current students.
A chemistry-based quiz bowl will also take place for students to showcase their knowledge, with a chance to win prizes including a scholarship for each member of the winning team if they choose to enroll at Etown.
Engaging activities will take place in the College’s state-of-the-art chemistry laboratories in Musser Hall, which were renovated in the summer of 2023 to facilitate the extensive research- and discovery-based learning activities that are the core of Etown’s Chemistry and STEM curriculum.
