The exhibit, “a portrait – A Portrait Project” will travel to the Lancaster Museum of Art in the spring of 2025

Elizabethtown College’s upcoming art exhibition, “a portrait – A Portrait Project,” will showcase 23 visual artists working in differing styles, media, and approaches to define and explore what a portrait can be – both experimental and traditional.

The exhibit will be displayed from Sept. 28 through Dec. 13 in the Hess Gallery, Zug Memorial Hall and Lyet Gallery, Leffler Chapel & Performance Center. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.

An opening reception will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Hess Gallery, which will feature a discussion with curator and Etown alumnus George Krevsky ’62. Both the exhibit and opening reception are free and open to the public.

“I am extremely excited to share in bringing this extraordinary art exhibition to campus,” Krevsky, a San Francisco-based art dealer and owner of Krevsky Fine Art said. “Working with exhibit organizer Milt Friedly, it has been a pleasure to provide the local and campus community an opportunity to enjoy the creative contributions of the invited artists.”

In the spring of 2025, the exhibit will travel to the Lancaster Museum of Art and will be hosted by Abigail Baer, Executive Director of the Demuth Foundation.

“This project was conceived to challenge invited artists to work traditionally and non-traditionally in interpreting what can be a portrait,” Friedly, Professor of Art at Elizabethtown College said. “A diverse group of visual artists, including writer E. Ethelbert Miller, rose to the challenge as we created an exhibition that met the expectations of curator George Krevsky and should challenge the public to look beyond a likeness when considering a portrait.”

The exhibit will feature the creative work of artists, including several alumni, who will explore the definition of a portrait through concept, media, approach, and presentation. Meet the artists and learn more about their work at etown.edu.
