Elizabethtown College’s Engineering Department was highly involved in Kern Engineering Entrepreneurship Network (KEEN) Engineering Unleashed Faculty Development activities this summer.

Atwood and DeGoede’s workshop, “Learning From Failure with Mastery-Based Learning,” was part of the KEEN Faculty Development Series.

Dean of the School of Engineering and Computer Science, Dr. Sara Atwood and Professor of Engineering and Physics, Dr. Kurt DeGoede co-facilitated a four-day workshop with Ohio Northern University Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Josh Gargac and University of Detroit, Mercy Professor of Mechanical Engineering Shuvra Das in Albuquerque, N.M. from July 29 through Aug. 1.

Their workshop, “Learning From Failure with Mastery-Based Learning,” sold out quickly and was filled to capacity with more than 50 faculty from across the country on the waitlist. The workshop was part of the KEEN Faculty Development Series and the topic has been presented by Atwood and DeGoede at previous KEEN events.

“The Engineering Unleashed Faculty Development program, powered by KEEN (The Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network) provides an outstanding opportunity for our faculty and staff to level-up their courses, student mentoring, and program management,” DeGoede said.

Additionally, Professor of Engineering and Engineering Program Director, Dr. Brenda Read-Daily attended a workshop focused on engaging with industry advisory boards. Assistant Professor Mark Brinton participated in the infusing undergraduate research with an entrepreneurial mindset workshop, while Director of the Bowers Writers House, Jesse Waters engaged in a workshop centered on unleashing academic change.

The workshops are designed to be a rewarding, collaborative learning experience to expand the use of the engineering entrepreneurial mindset. Workshop attendance and travel are funded by the Kern Family Foundation through Etown’s status as a KEEN institutional partner.
