Whether it’s a funny anecdote from your dorm days, a moment of mentorship from a class or professor, or a standout experience from a campus event, these stories submitted by members of the Blue Jay community not only commemorate the rich history of our institution but also serve as a reminder of the lasting impact that Elizabethtown College has had on the lives of so many individuals.
Your Stories: Jessica L. (Shue) Morris ’92 – English Literature
During my junior year, Dr. Tom Dwyer (English professor) invited students to attend a poetry reading at Lebanon Valley College, where we would hear Hayden Carruth read his poetry. I was thrilled to accept and I ended up sitting next to Dr. Dwyer during the reading. After Mr. Carruth read, “The Cows at Night”, Dr. Dwyer leaned over to me and whispered, “That one is my all-time favorite.” I was beyond excited to be privy to this “secret” info about my favorite professor, and a year later, when I was about to graduate, I had the poem done in calligraphy and framed as a parting gift to him.
After giving it to him, and thanking him for being a wonderful teacher for the last four years, especially during my senior seminar, I left his office. As I walked down the hall, I turned to look back and saw Dr. Dwyer standing in his office, holding the frame up and admiring the poem. I always wished I had a painting of that moment to hang on the wall, as it was so touching to see his delight in the gift. But as I write these words and tears fall from my eyes, I realize I have had the painting of it all along – on the wall of my heart.
