On Feb. 14, 1993, the Annenberg Center opened, an addition to the Baugher Student Center (BSC) that provided new opportunities for a robust student life on campus.
The Annenberg Center was named after media mogul Walter Annenberg, who donated $1 million to Elizabethtown College in honor of his high school science teacher Phares Hertzon, who eventually became a Professor of Science at the College. Annenberg received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Etown in 1974. The building was constructed in the post-modern style and was built on the former site of North, Center, and South Halls.
The building included the new Jay’s Nest snack bar; The Roost, a student-run pub serving non-alcoholic beverages and equipped with dart boards, games, and TV monitors; table game areas on the upper level; a physical fitness area; student lounges and meeting rooms; and Hershey Hall, used for dances, entertainment, and social events. A connecting walkway at the upper level allowed students to easily access the Baugher Student Center.
Today, the Annenberg Center still serves as a hub for student life, holding the Jays Nest, the Jay Lounge, the Blue Bean, and administrative offices and meeting spaces for student clubs and organizations.
