Twelve Elizabethtown College students were recently inducted as lifetime members of the International Academic Honor Society in Sociology, Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), on April 15.
“This is the largest group of inductees at one time that the chapter has had in the 20 years I have been the Chapter Representative for the Chi Chapter of Pennsylvania,” Elizabethtown College Professor of Sociology, Michele Lee Kozimor ’93 said. “When I was inducted in 1992, I was one of two students that year. I’m excited about the potential AKD activities for next year since we have such a strong junior cohort.”
Etown’s AKD inductees include Eily Barker ’26, Hannah Baum ’24, Alexis Cooper ’25, Julie Cooper ’26, Caroline Czerpak ’25, Liz Rojas Gomez ’24, Olivia Morrison ’25, Pamela Piña ’25, Rena Rankin ’25, Andy (Alexis) Rashchynski ’25, Aidan Schweizer ’24, and Ryan Wittman ’25.
AKD’s purpose is to promote human welfare through the association of a fellowship group interested in developing scientific knowledge that may be applied to the solution of social problems. Its name signifies Alpha Kappa Delta’s goal, which is to study humankind for the purpose of service.
Undergraduate inductees must be enrolled as either a major or minor in a sociology program, have a 3.3 overall grade point average, of their graduating class, maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average in sociology courses, and complete at least 12 credits in sociology.
About Alpha Kappa Delta
Alpha Kappa Delta was founded in 1920 at the University of Southern California by Dr. Emory Bogardus, additional sociology faculty, and 14 graduate students. In the following year, Bogardus invited other sociology departments to establish chapters of AKD, which became affiliated with the Association of College Honor Societies in 1967. Elizabethtown College’s AKD chapter, Chi, was founded in 1985. Kozimor is the current chapter representative and was inducted into AKD at Etown in 1992. Kozimor has also served in numerous leadership positions within AKD as the Region 3 representative and previously as president of the organization.
