A group of eight Elizabethtown College students took part in an opportunity led by A.C. Baugher Professor of Chemistry James MacKay to serve as judges for a junior high science fair held in February at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Etown for homeschooled students of the greater Harrisburg area.
“The comments from our Etown student judges showed careful thought into the rigor and design of student experiments while encouraging all students to lean into science and the potential for careers in STEM,” MacKay said. “These judges represented Etown well and were such a gift to the homeschool community.”
Etown students Julia Bowersox ’24, Ahsa Sadhukhan ’25, Emily Baer ’25, Angelina Giglio-Tos ’25, Justin Cosgrove ’25, Jennah Hoke ’25, Ryan Smith ’25, and Alexa Scheetz ’25 all attended the event. The Blue Jays hold a variety of majors which allowed them to offer a diverse expertise to the junior high students.
“I enjoyed seeing the excitement the students had for the projects they developed and for science in general,” Cosgrove said. “They worked hard on their projects and presentations, and it was awesome to be able to see that in action.”
The event was hosted by Classical Conversations, an international classical Christian homeschool organization.
“Participation in events like these give Etown students the opportunity to showcase our College’s Educate for Service motto,” MacKay said. “Judging at a science fair puts our students in the community, which puts our motto of Educate for Service into action and makes our mission more visible to parents and students.”
