In recognition of Computer Science (CS) Education Week (Dec. 4-10), we’re highlighting Elizabethtown College’s innovative Computer Science program, which gives students the cutting-edge skills needed to solve problems through software.
Computer Science students at Etown have the opportunity to specialize in one of our four dynamic concentrations, which include the recently launched Artificial Intelligence & Data Science and Cybersecurity concentrations. These new areas of study provide students with valuable hands-on experience to prepare them for their future careers. Additional CS concentrations include Hardware and Web & Application Design.
The Artificial Intelligence & Data Science concentration equips students to analyze and interpret data across diverse fields like business, biology, physics, medicine, and more. The Cybersecurity concentration equips students with a specialized skillset to succeed in a high-demand field by teaching them to evaluate and design systems to secure devices, databases, webs, and networks against cybersecurity threats.
“The demand for professionals in cybersecurity and AI has never been higher,” Associate Professor of Computer Science Peilong Li said. “These two concentrations prepare students to meet this need, providing students with the knowledge to protect and enhance our communities, paving the way to dynamic career paths, and making our graduates top candidates that employers actively seek out.”
Take a look at the top five skills and experiences that CS students obtain at Elizabethtown College.
1.) Working with disciplines outside of computer science.
Etown Computer Science students collaborate with other majors, including data science, business, biology, and engineering on research projects. Etown offers a 124+ year tradition of helping students to think critically, analyze deeply, and communicate effectively.
2.) Working on a team outside of the classroom.
More than 70% of the Etown Computer Science students are involved in extracurricular activities or part-time employment in addition to their academic studies. These extracurricular activities develop valuable professional skills such as leadership, teamwork, and time management.
3.) Working with other computer science disciplines.
Computer Science at Etown is a multidisciplinary program that focuses on teaching a broad technical foundation and dynamic real-world experiences.
4.) Developing problem-solving skills through interdisciplinary curriculum, student research, and capstone design projects.
All Etown Computer Science students complete two signature learning experiences including student research, internships, capstone projects, and community-based learning. The demand for internship experiences continues to rise.
5.) Creating innovation through hands-on projects individually and with others.
Throughout their four years, Etown Computer Science students work on hands-on projects in our advanced data analytics lab, robotics lab, and networking & operating systems lab.
