Elizabethtown College Associate Provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Innovation and Professor of Social Work Susan Mapp co-edited the recently published book, “Successful Baccalaureate Social Work Programs: A Guide for Current and Emerging Leaders.”
The book, which Mapp co-edited with Needha Boutté-Queen, a Professor of Social Work and Senior Associate Provost and Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs at Texas Southern University, is a collection of research, experiences, and insights of 25 social work educators. Mapp, who served as Etown’s Social Work Department Chair and Social Work Program Director for more than a decade, also contributed to the book.
“Even though social work programs are required to have program directors, there is little information about how to do the job well,” Mapp said. “This book grew out of research we conducted about what these individuals would like to know more about and I’m very excited to see it in print.”
The book covers a broad variety of topics related to leadership in academia, particularly social work. “One of my favorite aspects about this book is that it will be useful to any academic in a leadership position,” Mapp said. “If they have to recruit and lead faculty, manage budget, recruit students, ensure an inclusive environment, work with adjunct faculty, or assess student learning, there is pertinent information in the book for them.”
At the national level, Mapp served two terms on the Council on Social Work Education Board of Directors and one term on the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors Board of Directors. She is the author of numerous articles and books, primarily on human rights and global social work, and has presented her research at national and international conferences.
The book is available for purchase through the Council for Social Work Education (CSWE) Press.
