Elizabethtown College’s School for Graduate and Professional Studies (SGPS) launched one of the region’s only graduate certificates in Medical Spanish. The five-course, 15-credit certificate program will increase candidates’ language and cultural communication skills and deepen their understanding of the barriers and challenges facing diverse Hispanic/Latinx communities seeking health care.

“Healthcare should be accessible, compassionate, and communicative,” Elizabethtown College Dean of Arts and Humanities Kevin Shorner-Johnson said. “The Graduate Certificate in Medical Spanish provides medical care staff with the additional knowledge and skills to create positive impacts on society in trusting and nurturing healthcare environments.”

The program fills the demand that Healthcare systems are increasingly seeking for their nurses, doctors, therapists, administrators, and other personnel to overcome language and cultural barriers in order to improve provider-patient communication while enhancing the quality of care and patient safety.

The Graduate Certificate in Medical Spanish program aims to provide the following outcomes for students:

  • Acquire and use a variety of medical terminology in Spanish and modify language register as appropriate to their audience.
  • Analyze, critique, and articulate barriers facing Hispanic/Latinx patients within regional health systems.
  • Describe best practices of interpretation, confidentiality, and ethical linguistic practice.
  • Identify, describe, and respond to cultural factors that influence practices and information related to illness, well-being, and health care.
  • All students who successfully complete the program will be encouraged to sit for the ALTA Clinician Cultural and Linguistic Assessment Test(CCLA) or the Qualified Bilingual Staff Test (QBS).
