Elizabethtown College announced several students have been awarded prestigious scholarships and fellowships during the 2022-23 academic year, with highlights including one student earning the highly competitive Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education, three being named Gilman Scholars, and two garnering Critical Language Scholarships.

“By earning these prestigious awards through their commitment to academics, our exceptional students are demonstrating the limitless opportunities and experiences an Elizabethtown College education provides to further their knowledge in their chosen fields,” Elizabethtown College President Betty Rider said. “Our institution commends these students for their achievements, along with the support system our faculty and staff have fostered to help set their path for future success.”

The following Etown students received scholarships and fellowships:

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education – Tristan Mabee ’24 (Mount Joy, Pa.), Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Major, Data Analytics Minor, Honors Program, Momentum Program
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater. Considered to be the country’s preeminent undergraduate scholarship award in natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering, the Goldwater Scholarship was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in these fields. “Elizabethtown College has provided me with a community of intelligent, hardworking, and friendly scientists that I am proud to call my colleagues and mentors,” Mabee said. “In addition to exceptional coursework that has included unique research projects in biology and chemistry, I have been able to be an active member of a research group since my first year on campus. This unique opportunity has resulted in me receiving this honor, and as I continue to learn and grow at Etown, I am confident that this scholarship will aid my goal of earning a Ph.D. in chemical synthesis.”

Critical Language Scholarship
The CLS scholarship is one of the most competitive scholarships in the U.S. and is the most prestigious language program for U.S. citizens. With an acceptance rate of less than 10%, the program covers about one academic year of university-level language coursework during an eight-to-10-week program. Read more.

– Laura Cardona ’23 (Broomfield, Colo.), International Business & Political Science Majors, Honors Program, Stamps Scholar, Momentum Program

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to improve my Mandarin skills in a fully immersive environment and to explore the local area with my host family and cohort peers,” Cardona, who will travel abroad to Tamkang University (TKU) in New Taipei City, Taiwan to participate in the program that runs from June 14 to Aug. 10 said. “Additionally, I’m thrilled to learn more about the TKU program’s themes of Sustainable Development and Business and Entrepreneurship, which are directly aligned with my personal and career interests.”

From Sept. 2022 to March 2023, Cardona participated in the CLS Spark program, a remote pilot program created because of the success of virtual CLS programs made available during the COVID-19 pandemic.

EuroScholars – Alex Lynch ’24 (Nazareth, Pa.), International Business Major, Honors Program
Created in 2005 by Leiden University in the Netherlands, EuroScholars aims is to create a framework within which young talented researchers (international students) and senior European researchers can work together on academic research. Participants in the program become true “EuroScholars” by contributing to European scientific research. Read more. 

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship is part of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is supported by the Institute of International Education (IIE). The program looks to fund students who have been historically underrepresented in studying abroad.

The highly competitive Gilman Scholarship was established in 2001. Etown’s first Gilman Scholar was announced in 2009, with a total of 29 Etown students having been named Gilman Scholars since that time. Read more.

– Zulma Escalante ’24 (Millsboro, Del.), International Business Major, Spanish Minor, Momentum Program

“The Gilman Program will not only help me financially throughout my study abroad experience, but it will also open new doors of networking and skill development opportunities,” Escalante, who will study abroad for the spring 2023 semester at the University of Granada, Spain said. “I’m excited to see where this opportunity leads me!”

– Frida Sanchez-Rosalino ’25 (Philadelphia, Pa.), Spanish Education Major, Family Business & Entrepreneurship Minor, Honors Program, Momentum Program

“The Gilman Scholarship will fund my academic experience abroad and help me achieve my future career goals as an educator,” Frida, who will study abroad this upcoming fall at the University of Seville in Spain said. “I will improve my language skills in European Spanish and experience the beautiful host city’s rich, traditional Spanish culture. I will live with a host family, explore the Andalucía region, understand the history and culture, and relate different experiences connecting me to the world, seeking a new perspective.”

– Wade Cook ’25 (Marietta, Pa.), Japanese Major, Asian Studies & Communications Minors

“Through his service in the United States Air Force, Wade developed skills in citizen diplomacy,” Elizabethtown College Director of Special Programs and Prestigious Scholarships & Fellowships Jean-Paul Benowitz said. “Living all around the world has given Wade an international perspective seldom found among American undergraduate students. As a Gilman Scholar at Kansai Gaidai University (Hirakata, Japan), Wade will contribute to building positive international relations as he enters into cultural exchange experiences studying the Japanese language through immersion learning.”

Elizabethtown College Office of Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships Summer Enrichment Grants

  • Maria Brzezinski ’26 (Bel Air, Md.), Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major
  • Justin Cosgrove ’25 (Reading, Pa.), Chemistry major
  • Isaac Kraenbring ’25 (Columbia, Pa.), Chemistry, Mathematics major
  • Nicholas Zonarich ’25 (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), Actuarial Science, Data Analytics, Economics major

Summer Enrichment Grants are available to help fund summer research, selective internships, or enrichment travel related to a course of study. At least six grants of $1,000 each are to provide enrichment opportunities for high-achieving Etown students in their pursuit of research, study, and travel experiences advancing their own particular course of study during the summer. These nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships fund such opportunities as specialized study abroad, independent research, and graduate study. Read more. 


Prestigious scholarships and fellowships provide funding for a wide range of activities:

  • Full tuition, fees, and a living stipend to earn a graduate degree abroad
  • Undergraduate or graduate study in the U.S.
  • Conducting a research project abroad
  • Teaching English abroad
  • Internships abroad
  • Social engagement projects in the U.S. or abroad
