Seven Elizabethtown College students, accompanied by Professor of Sociology Dr. Michele Lee Kozimor ’93 and Adjunct Instructor of Sociology Dr. Barbara Prince ’12, recently attended the 2023 Eastern Sociological Society (ESS) Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Md.
At the conference, Anita Smith ’24 and Gillian Toomey ’23 presented their General Social Survey research projects, which they wrote during their year-long Research Methods and Statistical Analysis course.
Toomey’s poster, “Good Cop, Bad Cop: The Effects of Race and Political Views on Policing Attitudes,” placed second in the poster presentation. Smith’s poster, “In the Crosshairs: The Effects of Political Ideology and Sex on Support for Gun Control,” was awarded Best Undergraduate Poster.
“It was nice to be able to see my hard work through the class last year pay off,” Smith said. “Attending this conference was an important academic opportunity because it allowed me to connect and network with others in the Sociology and Criminal Justice field.”
An additional five Etown students enrolled in SOC 331: Statistical Analysis (Rachael Ioele ’23, Olivia Morrison ’25, Andy Lynch ’25, Hannah Smith ’25, Rena Rankin ’25), along with two students enrolled in Statistical Analysis at Lebanon Valley College, presented their collaborative community-based research project titled, “To Belong or Not to Belong: Examining Perceptions and Value of a Pennsylvania Sociological Society Membership Among Sociologists.”
