Two Elizabethtown College Communications students were recently awarded Student Keystone Media Awards for the Best Feature Story (Broadcast) category.

Journalism major Faith Morrow ’24 won first place for her broadcast news package, “Local Business Owner Continues Mom’s Legacy.” Digital Media Production major Kyle Florey ‘24 won second place for his broadcast news package, “Friendly Feline Becomes Customer Favorite at Local Farm Supply Store.”

“This is a great opportunity for students to have their work showcased to a larger audience,” Professor of Communications Dr. Kirsten Johnson said. “It also validates that the students are producing professional and high-quality work, as determined not only by me but also by the contest judges. Both Faith and Kyle do excellent work, and I am so proud that their work is being recognized publicly.”

The Student Keystone Media Awards contest recognizes any high school and college student journalism that displays relevance, integrity, and initiative in serving the audience. Students who have had their work published in their school newspaper or digital news site are eligible to enter.

The students reported, shot, and edited their packages in Johnson’s COM 316: Broadcast News course. Both Morrow and Florey said Johnson’s instruction and advice are to thank for their success.

“Dr. Johnson was the professor who taught me everything I needed to know about how to make a good news package,” Florey said. “She really helped me hone my skills and encouraged me to do my best, no matter what I am creating.”

Morrow believes her time in the Communications Department prepared her well not only for this experience but for her future career as well.

“As someone who wants to work at a news station post-graduation, learning about the elements of news stories and how to create them through Communications classes and ECTV has been helpful,” Morrow said. “Before coming to Etown, I had never worked with cameras, microphones, or editing software. Now in my junior year, I feel much more comfortable using these to create impactful news stories. Hands-on experiences in student media organizations and the journalism program have helped me feel confident in the direction my career is headed.”

Both students will be honored at the Student Keystone Media Awards Event on April 26 in Harrisburg, Pa.
