The Carl W. Zeigler Professor of Religion, Philosophy, and Asian Studies at Elizabethtown College, Jeffery D. Long has signed a contract with Routledge to write a book on the Buddha. Expected to be published in early 2024, Long’s upcoming publication, “The Buddha: A Perennial Voice for Nonviolence,” will be part of the Routledge Peacemaker series.

This book will focus on the Buddha as a peacemaker, a voice for nonviolence. His message, though ancient, is as relevant today as it was when he first proclaimed it 2500 years ago: that we can only find true happiness when we practice compassion for all beings.

“I was honored to be invited to write a book on the Buddha,” Long said. “Most of my published writing has been about the Hindu and Jain traditions. I am excited to write about the Buddha, as I have been teaching courses on Buddhism for the last 25 years.”

Long has authored five books and has edited or co-edited five more. His most recent publication, “Hinduism in America: A Convergence of Worlds,” was released in August 2020 and detailed the history of the Hindu community in America, as well as the influence of Hinduism on American popular culture, from the Beatles to Star Wars.
