Recently, the Elizabethtown College Board of Trustees announced the appointments of three new members. Carl Freeman, Mark A. Heckler ’77, and Michael J. Lorelli ’88 will join the Board of Trustees July 1 for three-year terms.

“We are thrilled to have three new Trustees join our Board with diverse and dynamic professional backgrounds to offer their expertise and talents as we work to elevate our institution,” Elizabethtown College Board Chairman Ed Lovelidge ’82 said.

The approval was confirmed at the May 2022 Board of Trustees meetings. The new Trustees’ backgrounds include:

Carl Freeman: Vice President for Ahold Delhaize providing strategic leadership and direction for manufacturing, distribution, transportation, and reclamation initiatives servicing the Mid-Atlantic region of Ahold/Delhaize USA. Previously, Freeman had served a decade at the Mars Chocolate North America’s Elizabethtown, Pa. facility, as both manufacturing and site director. Freeman taught a first-of-its-kind leadership class during the fall semester of 2013 to Elizabethtown College’s business school students and has been a featured speaker several times for the College’s Mars Wrigley Confectionery Executive Lecture Series. He has served on the College’s Leadership Council since 2019.

Freeman received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Tennessee State University and his M.B.A. from Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management.

Mark A. Heckler ’77: A 1977 graduate of Elizabethtown College, Heckler served as the 18th President of Valparaiso University in Indiana. Under his leadership, the University diversified and expanded, launching numerous new undergraduate and graduate degree programs. He has also overseen the groundbreaking and dedications of more than seven new campus facilities and has established the Institute for Leadership and Service at Valparaiso University.

Heckler graduated summa cum laude from Elizabethtown College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts earned a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from the Catholic University of America, and his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Innovation from the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Colorado.

Michael J. Lorelli ’88: is Senior Vice President for Commercial Asset Management at High Associates, Ltd. He is responsible for the management of all the commercial/industrial real estate within the High real estate portfolio in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Florida. His property management responsibilities include financial performance, physical condition, tenant relations, financings, lease management, and project management from an ownership perspective on new construction projects and acquisitions. In addition to asset management functions, he also oversees the operation of four departments of High Associates, including the Executive Offices at Greenfield Corporate Center and Rossmoyne Business Center, property management operations, property services, grounds, facility, and renovation services.

The Michael J. Lorelli ’88 Business Department Internship and Student-Faculty Research Fund supports Elizabethtown College students through either an internship and/or a student-faculty opportunity that includes collaborating and conducting research with faculty members. Lorelli earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Management at Elizabethtown College and has completed courses at Franklin & Marshall College and MIT.

Also approved at the May 2022 Board of Trustees meeting, the adoption of three Emeriti Trustees appointments which include:

  • Edward R. Murphy H’12 P’01: Retired, Facility Manager, West Publishing Company
  • James E. Shreiner ’73 G’24: Retired, Senior Executive Vice President, Fulton Financial Corp.
  • Judy S. Ware ’68: Retired, Art Teacher, Lancaster County Day School; Elizabethtown College Ware Lecture on Peacemaking

About Emeriti Trustees

  • Edward R. Murphy H’12 P’01: Retired, Facility Manager, West Publishing Company

Murphy served on the Elizabethtown College Board of Trustees since 2003 as vice-chair and chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, and as a member of committees including Finance, Executive, Student Affairs, Enrollment and Marketing.

His ongoing support started the first private scholarship for adult learners enrolled in the School of Graduate and Professional Studies called The Edward and Carol Murphy/Charlotte W. Newcombe Endowed Scholarship for Mature Women Students which led to the creation of three additional scholarships for adult learners. Murphy and his wife Carol have provided additional support to the James B. Hoover Center, Elizabethtown College Fund, and the Edward and Carol Murphy Scholarship. The Murphy’s established the Edward R. Murphy Center in which the College’s School of Graduate and Professional Studies (SGPS) is located.

For more than 50 years he was dedicated to community service through his volunteer work for the Vulcan Fire Department in Lynbrook, N.Y. His volunteer work as treasurer and captain helped ensure public safety and culminated with his being named Honorary Chief, and he was a loyal and longstanding employee of West Publishing Company for 31 years working his way up through many positions and at retirement serving as Facility Manager.

Murphy received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from St. John’s University and in 2012 his Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Elizabethtown College.

  • James E. Shreiner ’73 G’24: Retired, Senior Executive Vice President, Fulton Financial Corp.

Shreiner served on the Elizabethtown College Board of Trustees in various roles since 1998 including Board Chair, Institutional Advancement Chair, and Presidential Search Committee Chair, The High Center as Executive in Residence, and as a member of many committees including Student Life, Executive, Trusteeship, Academic Affairs, Finance, and Finance and Infrastructure. He also chaired capital campaigns and played an integral role in the To Serve Tomorrow campaign that created the Hoover Center for Business, the Masters Center for Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering, and he chaired the Be More Inspired Campaign which raised nearly $75 million that created the Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness and Well-Being for the College.

Shreiner and his wife Mary’s ongoing support of fundraising efforts focused not only on capital projects but support on programs designed to strengthen Etown including support for the President’s Strategic Initiative Fund, the Strikwerda-Bossenga Award, the Elizabethtown College Fund, and the Physician Assistant program.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1973 from Elizabethtown College and continued his education at the School of Bank Operations at the University of Wisconsin, the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University, and the Duke Advanced Management Program at Duke University.

  • Judy S. Ware ’68: Retired, Art Teacher, Lancaster County Day School; Elizabethtown College Ware Lecture on Peacemaking

From 2006 to 2021, Ware served on the Elizabethtown College Board of Trustees. She has aided in various roles including assistant secretary and secretary to the Board, chair of Enrollment and Marketing Committee, ad hoc member of the Innovation and Impact Committee, and as a member of committees including Student Affairs/Student Life, Executive, Institutional Advancement, Enrollment and Marketing, and Trusteeship. In addition, she chaired Leadership Giving for the Be More Inspired Campaign, served on its Steering Committee, and has supported capital projects including the Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness and Well-Being, Elizabethtown College Fund, Engineering Fabrication Laboratory, and the renovation of Gibble Hall, The President’s Strategic Initiatives Fund and The Strikwerda and Bossenga Award.

She and husband Paul created the Ware Colloquium on Peacemaking and Global Citizenship that has brought Nobel Peace Prize winners to campus, thus vastly enriching the lives of our students, faculty, staff, and members of the community. Ware lecturers include Nobel Laureates Desmond Tutu-former chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and anti-apartheid and human rights activist, Mary Robinson-former president of Ireland, Jody Williamschair of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, Muhammad Yunus-founder of Grameen Bank, and others including Terry Waite-founder of Hostage UK and Y Care International, Nicholas Kristof, Pulitzer Prize-Winning New York Times Columnist, and Silk Road Ensemble-a musical organization created to promote cross-cultural understanding and peacemaking.

Ware is an active volunteer, leader, and philanthropist within the Lancaster Community supporting higher education organizations and organizations including but not limited to LancasterHistory, Lancaster Public Library, Lancaster Country Day School, Lancaster City Council of Churches, Fulton Opera House, The North Museum, Lancaster Science Factory, Boys Scouts of America, Lancaster Symphony Orchestra.

After working for many years as an art teacher at Lancaster Country Day School, Ware retired in 1997 and was chosen to become a fellow and later an honorary alumna of the school. Ware earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education in 1968 from Elizabethtown College and continued her education by studying with Sam Feinstein in Philadelphia, and taking graduate courses at the University of Virginia, and Millersville University.


The Elizabethtown College Board of Trustees has final legislative authority in all matters pertaining to the purpose of the College and the policies for fulfilling the statement of purpose. Among the board’s primary functions are selecting the president of the College, developing and sustaining the philosophy and policies of the College, setting the costs of tuition and fees, adopting the annual budget, and approving plans for developing and maintaining the physical plant.
