Elizabethtown College announced several students have received national recognition by being awarded prestigious scholarships and fellowships during the 2021-22 academic year, including one student being named a recipient of the competitive Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, as well as a faculty member earning a prestigious Fulbright scholarship.
“These prestigious awards are a testament of the commitment and dedication our College demonstrates through scholarly work and research,” Elizabethtown College President Betty Rider said. “We are proud of our lifelong learning mission and commend the students and faculty who have been recognized with these high honors.”

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education – Emily Harding ’23, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major, Honors
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater. The Scholarships are reserved for college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Read more.
“Being awarded a national Goldwater Scholarship is beneficial for a number of reasons,” Harding said. “In addition to the financial support, I will be a competitive candidate when applying to Ph.D. programs in the fall. Additionally, being part of the Goldwater community is beneficial for networking with other scholars who share similar interests and are also pursuing a Ph.D.”
Fulbright Scholar – Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Management and Director of the Family Business and Entrepreneurship Program Dr. Petru Sandu
Dr. Sandu was named a Fulbright Scholar for Spain, 2023. The Fulbright Program is devoted to increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Explorers Club – Andrew Furman ’23, Political Science major, Communications and Philosophy minors, Honors
The Explorers Club is an American-based international multidisciplinary professional society with the goal of promoting scientific exploration and field study. Founded in 1904, in New York City, the club sponsors scientific exploration expeditions and serves as a meeting point for explorers and scientists worldwide. Read more.

The James A. Finnegan Fellowship Foundation works to provide practical training in government and politics for outstanding undergraduate students by offering a number of 10-week paid internships in executive agencies located in Harrisburg each summer. Read more.

Summer Enrichment Grants are available to help fund summer research, selective internships, or enrichment travel related to a course of study. At least six grants of $1,000 each are to provide enrichment opportunities for high achieving Etown students in their pursuit of research, study, and travel experiences advancing their own particular course of study during the summer. These nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships fund such opportunities as specialized study abroad, independent research, and graduate study. Read more.
Prestigious scholarships and fellowships provide funding for a wide range of activities:
- Full tuition, fees, and a living stipend to earn a graduate degree abroad
- Undergraduate or graduate study in the U.S.
- Conducting a research project abroad
- Teaching English abroad
- Internships abroad
- Social engagement projects in the U.S. or abroad
