This year’s WWEC award, presented at the Elizabethtown College Department of Communications Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 7, highlighted a unique bond between a dedicated DJ and a student mentor. Each year, the award recognizes a dedicated student DJ or station board member from the College’s WWEC 88.3 radio station who has demonstrated their commitment in the studio and at events on campus.
This year’s award was presented to Tommy Levosky, who came to Etown in 2014 when he was hired as a Utility Worker on the College’s Dining Services team. A devoted Etown employee, Levosky also has an unmatched passion for the radio, and his dream job is to be the host of his own radio show. Levosky has been involved in several shows for the College’s radio station throughout the years, and also participates in the Best Buddies in Pennsylvania, a friendship and leadership development program for individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Public Relations and Graphic Design double major Christian Schaaf ’22 nominated Levosky for this year’s WWEC award. After working closely with him in the radio station for the past two semesters, Schaaf said the decision was an obvious one.
“Tommy is the exemplary role model for all WWEC DJs,” Schaaf said. “He has the greatest passion for radio and is at home in the station. He is a natural and he inspires me every week!”
Schaaf and Levosky first connected at the beginning of fall 2021. When Levosky reached out to the WWEC email account to ask if anyone could do his show with him, Schaaf jumped at the opportunity. He spends an hour in the studio with Levosky each week, playing some of their favorite music and answering trivia questions related to the theme of the show.
“Tommy dedicates a lot of time to plan out his radio shows,” Schaaf said. “I love that he plans different themes for his show every week. For instance, one theme was ‘American Idol,’ and he chose all songs from American Idol contestants for his show that week. We always laugh a lot and have a great time!”
Schaaf has truly enjoyed the time he’s spent with Levosky over the past year, and he said he’s learned a lot from the experience.
“I have learned the importance of pursuing your interests, passions, and dreams,” Schaaf said. “Tommy belongs on the radio, and it has been an honor doing his show with him! I am excited to see what he does with the radio in the future!”
