Elizabethtown College is celebrating Women’s History Month with a series of events throughout the month of March.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Belonging, Title IX, and Student Life, along with the Etown Centers for Community and Civic Engagement and Global Understanding and Peacemaking, as well as the Office of Campus Recreation and Well-Being (RecWell) are hosting events that recognize and commemorate the vital role of women in American history.

International Women’s Day – BSC Concourse | Tuesday, March 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
CCCE, CGUP, and Student Life are sponsoring an International Women’s Day (IWD) program, which will celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This year’s theme is #BreakTheBias. The Etown campus community is invited to visit the BSC concourse to sign a pledge to break the bias in our communities, our workplaces, schools, and colleges.

Participants will have the opportunity to pin their pledge on the wall, and to get their picture taken with friends, classmates, teammates, colleagues, or one of our special guest campus women, including President Betty Rider.

Since the official color of IWD is purple, the campus community is encouraged to wear the color on March 8 to help celebrate!

International Women’s Day Events in The Bowers Center | Tuesday, March 8
Etown RecWell will be celebrating the occasion throughout the day in the Bower Center. Pictures and quotes of notable women in history will be hung along with the windows in the Bowers Center Lower Lounge and a series of events will help to recognize and celebrate the occasion.

  • 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.| Bowers Center Lower Lounge – Write cards to inspirational women in your life! Participants can either have RecWell mail them for you or you can hand-deliver the cards yourself. If you write and deliver a card, you can get entered into a raffle to win a Hershey Spa gift card!
  • 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. | Bowers Center Lower Lounge –An inspirational quote give & take board will be on display.
  • 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. | Bowers Center Lower Lounge – RecWell will be handing out girl power/inspirational stickers
  • 7 – 9 p.m. | Bowers Center Fitness Center – Women’s Power Hour – Flex your strength and redefine what it means to be strong during our International Women’s Day Power Hour. Open to all!
  • 7 p.m. | Bowers Center Group Fitness Room – Women’s Empowerment Spin Circuit class – Celebrate the unstoppable strength of women during this Women’s Empowerment Spin Circuit class, where we’ll play music from some of the top Music Diva’s! Open to all!

Ujima Dialogue Series – Brethren Heritage Room, High Library | Wednesday, March 9 at 7 p.m.
Join the Office of Diversity, Equity and Belonging for bi-weekly informal conversations driven by students. All faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate in discussions regarding how to combat internalized misogyny. “Ujima” is a principle of Kwanzaa, defined as “collective work and responsibility.”

Black History 101 Mobile Museum – First floor of the High Library | Wednesday, March 16 at 10 a.m.
Beginning with the first Black museums on the campuses of Howard and Wilberforce in the late 1800’s to the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C., this presentation provides insight into the significance and importance of Black museums in America. National Executive Director, Kavon Shah walks the audience through the process of developing this grassroots approach of educating the community about Black history through a philosophy of a visitor-centered, inclusionary, and accessible museum experience.

Music by Women Composers Concert – Zug Recital Hall | Monday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m.
Etown’s Music department is honoring women composers with a concert in Zug Recital Hall.

Ujima Dialogue Series – Brethren Heritage Room, High Library | Wednesday, March 23 at 7 p.m.
Join the Office of Diversity, Equity and Belonging for bi-weekly informal conversations driven by students. All faculty, staff, and students are invited to join Modern Language and Culture Lecturer, Vanessa Borilot in discussing women’s rights and the meaning of feminism.

Women of Etown Panel: Making Time for What Matters – The KAV | Thursday, March 24 at 6 p.m.
How do we make time for ourselves while managing school, work, home life, and social obligation while still navigating through a global pandemic? There will be an open dialogue about this with five panelists.

From Baldwin to Bell Hooks: Race, Resistance, and Rhetoric: Understanding a Philosophy of Love – McCormick Classroom, High Library | Monday, March 28 at 4 p.m.
Join Gene Thomas, Community Living Area Coordinator in considering: What is Love? As we explore this question, we also begin to explore how love is portrayed in the eyes of the individual, how It may be looked at collectively, how it can be framed when you consider race, class, and gender. James Baldwin and bell hooks offer philosophies on love and what it means contextually through literature, lived testimony, and expanding on it historically through the lens of the patriarchy.

Women of Etown Panel: Women Who Lead – Zoom | Thursday, March 31 at 6 p.m.
Do you shy away from the word, “leader” or “leadership”? Have you come to believe that some people were born leaders and others are not? We hear from six panelists on how to become your own type of leader through sharing stories and experiences. Join the virtual event.

Crafts and Conversations – The Bird Cage | Each Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Join the Title IX Office every Wednesday in March to discuss women’s issues as they relate to Title IX. We do crafts such as coloring, doll making, and affirmation writing. Participants are welcome to suggest crafts and topics you would like to see, submit all suggestions to Etown Deputy Title IX Coordinator Gabrielle Reed.
