Elizabethtown College Associate Professor of Engineering & Physics Brenda Read-Daily was recently featured as the American Society for Engineering Education’s (ASEE) February Spotlight for her initiative to bring environmental engineering into the K-12 classroom.
Last spring, Read-Daily visited Palmyra Area High School and engaged AP Chemistry students in water quality testing using environmental engineering techniques. With financial support from the Association of Environmental Engineering & Science Professors (AEESP) Foundation Grant Program, Read-Daily incorporated environmental engineering applications into the AP Chemistry curriculum with the goal of reinforcing conceptual understandings.
“Many high school students are unfamiliar with the opportunities that exist in environmental engineering,” Read-Daily said. “My hope is that this positive experience at Palmyra Area High School will serve as a springboard for future opportunities with other area high school science classes.”
Read-Daily’s project was also featured in the June publication of the AEESP Newsletter.
