A total of 362 Elizabethtown College students participated in the 28th annual Into the Streets community service event on Saturday, Oct. 23.
Organized by the Center for Community and Civic Engagement, this year’s event followed the theme “Blooming” Into the Streets to demonstrate the growth and perseverance of Etown students following their time away from campus.
Into the Streets is designed to introduce students to thoughtful community service and to provide a learning experience that will challenge them to volunteer on a regular basis.
There were more than 20 on- and off-campus community service projects available for Etown students to participate in. On-campus initiatives included writing appreciation letters to veterans, crafting holiday cards for children’s hospitals, and making reusable feminine hygiene products. Students were also offered the opportunity to travel and volunteer at a variety of local community agencies such as Cornerstone Youth Center, Elizabethtown Nursing and Rehab, Midwest Food Bank, ECHOS, and more.
Julianne Magin ’22, a student coordinator for the Center for Community and Civic Engagement, spoke to the importance of the event and reflected on what the initiative provides to the community.
“Into the Streets is important because it is a day each year where our College can live out its motto to ‘Educate for Service,'” said Magin. “It is great to see Etown students come together for the day to complete service projects, to be able to make a difference in our community, and to create friendships along the way.”
