Elizabethtown College Lecturer in English Erica M. Dolson’s short essay, “How I Renewed My Enthusiasm for Writing,” appeared as the December 2020 “Writing Life” column in Hippocampus Magazine.
Dolson’s creative work draws parallels of her own non-linear path as a writer to those of fictional character Jane Villanueva from the American romantic comedy-drama television series, Jane the Virgin.
“Some of my favorite parts of the series were watching Jane write,” Dolson remarked in her essay. “I looked forward to the magic as words filled the screen (sometimes complete with typos!). As I watched, I itched to write—not just for the hope of publication, but for the joy of the whole long and messy process.”
