Four Elizabethtown College students recently were awarded Fulbright Scholarships, the most students honored in one academic year in the College’s history.

“Prestigious scholarships and fellowships provide funding options to help make it possible to pursue something amazing which the student might not be able to do otherwise,” Director of Special Programs & Prestigious Scholarships Jean-Paul Benowitz said. “We encourage our high-achieving students to pursue nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships which fund undergraduate study, study abroad, graduate study, independent research, internships, and public service around the globe.”

The following Elizabethtown College were awarded Fulbright Awards:

U.S. Fulbright Awards 2020-2021

  • Sara Allocco, Class of 2020, Stamps Scholar; Honors Program; Spanish and Political Science double major; was named a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant ETA in Spain, commencing in Spring 2021.
  • Rebecca Voler, Class of 2020; Stamps Scholar; Honors Program; Physics Secondary Education major; Math and Spanish double minor; was named for a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Award to Timor-Leste, commencing in Spring 2021.
  • Ethan Waugh, Class of 2020; Stamps Scholar; Honors Program; Spanish and Political Science double major; was named a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant ETA in Spain. commencing in Spring 2021.

U.S. Fulbright Awards 2019-2020

  • Victoria Edwards, Class of 2019, Honors, International Business and Japanese double major, Political Science and Data Analytics double minor, Fulbright Research Grant, Japan (2019-2020), was admitted to the first cohort of Fulbright Students participating in The National Geographic Sciencetelling Bootcamp for 2020.

The following Elizabethtown College students were recently honored with prestigious scholarships, awards and/or upcoming fellowships.

James A. Finnegan Fellowship Fellow 2020-2021

  • Ashley Reick, Class of 2022; Momentum Program; Honors Program; Political Science major; Communications, minor; was named a Finnegan Fellow by the James A. Finnegan Fellowship with the Government of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for Summer 2020.
  •  Alissa Stoneking, Class of 2020; Honors Program; Political Science and German double major; International Studies minor; was named a Finnegan Fellow by the James A. Finnegan Fellowship, with the Government of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for Summer 2020.

Peace Corps 2020

  • Samantha Romberger, Class of 2020; Momentum Program; Honors Program; English Professional Writing major; Anthropology and Women and Gender Studies double minor, has been named a Peace Corps Volunteer Teaching English as a Foreign Language/Secondary School English Teacher in Comoros for 2020-2022.

External Competitive Awards:

  • Natalie Nye, Class of 2020, Spanish and Business double major; Studio Art minor; has been named an Alice Lloyd Graduate Fellow by Alpha Lambda Delta, a national honor society.
  • Matthew J. Smith, Class of 2021, Stamps Scholar; Honors Program; History major; Middle Eastern Studies Individualized Major; Peace and Conflict Studies minor; Religious Studies minor; has been named an intern with the Middle East Institute Leadership Development Program for Summer 2020.

  • John Talbott, Class of 2022; Honors Program; Chemistry (American Chemical Society); Business Administration minor; candidate for a Goldwater Scholarship, has been awarded an Elizabethtown College Summer Enrichment Grant sponsored by the office of Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships for Summer 2020.

Prestigious scholarships and fellowships provide funding for a wide range of activities:

  • full tuition, fees, and a living stipend to earn a graduate degree abroad
  • undergraduate or graduate study in the U. S.
  • conducting a research project abroad
  • teaching English abroad
  • internships abroad
  • social engagement projects in the US or abroad

Elizabethtown College’s first Prestigious Scholarship and Fellowship was awarded to one student in 1995. From 1995-2012, for 17 years, six students were awarded a Prestigious Scholarship and Fellowship. During this time the most prestigious were Rhodes (Oxford) and Jackson-Davies (Cambridge). Since 2013, for the last seven years, multiple students each year were awarded Prestigious Scholarship and Fellowships totaling 21. This year, students received the most awards in one year. Since 2004, Etown students have received 20 Fulbright awards. Since 1995, a total of 27 Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships (National Competitions) and 26 Finnegan Fellows (State Competitions) have been awarded to students.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. The primary source of funding for the Fulbright Program is an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
