Jeffery Long, professor of religion and Asian studies, posted a blog, “No, Not All Hindus Are Indian: Calling Tulsi Gabbard a ‘Fake Hindu’ Is Offensive and Misinformed,” on Medium.com.
Long also published the essay “What a Hope! He Came with a Message of Peace and Love” in the February 2019 issue of Parabola: The Search for Meaning. Dr. Long’s essay was on the welcome address of Swami Vivekananda at the 1893 Parliament of World Religions and its significance for interfaith dialogue.
Charla Lorenzen, associate professor of Spanish, was selected to review proposals for the 2019 American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages national conference.
Lorenzen also served on the National Screening Committee for 2019-2020 English Teaching Assistant Fulbright applications in December 2018.
Emma Neuhauser, associate professor of finance, advised and mentored a team of senior finance students from the department of business and won the 2019 Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Research Challenge for the Philadelphia region. The CFA Institute Research Challenge is a worldwide investment competition which tests the critical analysis, valuation, report writing, and presentation skills of university students. Teams from 23 universities in the Philadelphia region participated in the 2019 CFA Institute Research Challenge.
The competition began in Oct. 2018 with the analytical research report round that required the team to research and analyze a publicly traded company and write an extensive initiation report, along with a recommendation to buy, sell or hold stock from that company. Following hundreds of hours of research, debates, and writing, the Elizabethtown College team won the analytical research report round on Jan. 28.
The College’s team was one of four teams invited to present the investment research in Union League of Philadelphia on Feb. 13. The teams that competed in the presentation round (ranked by scores of the written report) are:

- University of Delaware
- York College of Pennsylvania
- Temple University

Mentoring of the team to prepare for the “Q&A” portion of the presentation has been the most important component in winning such a competitive research challenge. The team performed very well while being questioned on analytical techniques and justifications about the investment recommendation. After winning at the final round of the Research Challenge event, the College’s team will represent the CFA Philadelphia chapter and proceed to the U.S. Regional Competition to compete at the global finals held in New York City in April.

Morgan Smith, current graduate student, was selected to attend the American Occupational Therapy Association/American Occupational Therapy Foundation Summer Institute for Future Scientists in Occupational Therapy. The Summer Institute and Summit of Scholars is held in June at the Medical University of South Carolina. The Summer Institute “recognizes and develops students who have shown dedication to research in the profession and are interested in making significant contributions as scientists in the field.”
The competitive application process is a national search open to occupational therapy students with an interest and passion in pursuing ongoing research; selected individuals receive scholarships to attend the institute.
