JUNE 2018

Tamara K. Humbert, DEd, OTR/L and Nancy Carlson, PhD, OTR/L attended the World Federation of Occupational Therapy (WFOT) Congress from May 21-25, 2018, in Cape Town, South Africa. The WFOT congress is held every four years.

Humbert and Rebecca Anderson MS’15, OTR/L presented a poster, “A mutual journey: Occupational therapists’ meaningful experiences of therapeutic use of self: a phenomenological study.”

Carlson also presented a poster, “The BBC Sensory Scales: An innovative approach to measuring sensory patterns among pediatric populations.”

 

Debbie Waltermire, DrPH, OTR/L attended the 8th-Annual International Patient and Family Centered Care Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, June 11 and 12. She and Pamela Donohue, associate professor of pediatrics and director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, gave the presentation “Enhancing the Practice of Family Centered Rounds for Patients and Providers.”

 

MAY 2018

  • Current OT graduate student Jennifer Newman ’17 presented the poster “Interdisciplinary Collaboration to Develop a Walker Attachment To Increase Stabilization and Reduce the Risk of Falls in the Elderly Population.” Ericksen was a contributing author and faculty mentor.

APRIL 2018

Ann Marie Potter, lecturer in occupational therapy, presented a research poster at the American Occupational Therapy Association Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, titled “Occupation-based coaching for commercial truck drivers: A pilot study.” This poster covered the graduate research project she mentored during 2016-2017. Alum Rachel Sassaman presented the poster with her.

Occupational therapy students Breanne Bentz ’17 MS ’18, Lindsay Crue ’17 MS ’18 and Stephanie Leiby ’17 MS ’18 presented their graduate research project, mentored by Ann Marie Potter, lecturer in occupational therapy, at the Male Breast Cancer Fest on April 21 in New York City. The work also was presented as part of SCAD.

 

MARCH 2018

Current occupational therapy graduate student Danielle Barattini BS ’17 as well as Kayla Zwicharowski MS ’17 co-authored the article “Inpatient Behavioral Health: Fieldwork Students Staff a Drop-In Center.” The article was published in the March 12, 2018, edition of “OT Practice,” a publication by the American Occupational Therapy Association.  The article discussed a program they helped develop and implement during their fieldwork at the St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey.

DECEMBER 2017

Debbie Waltermire, lecturer in the Department of Occupational Therapy, served as a panelist on the topic, “Perspectives on Patient Safety in The Johns Hopkins Hospital: A Conversation with Patients and Family Members” in December. The Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality in Baltimore, Maryland, sponsored this “grand rounds presentation.”

 

NOVEMBER 2017

Terri Dennehy, lecturer in Occupational Therapy, gave the presentation, “Innovations in Intraprofessional Education,” at the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Education Summit.  The conference was held Oct. 27 and 28 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Daniel Panchik, associate professor of occupational therapy, presented “Effectiveness of Advanced Pneumatic Compression Devices on Lymphedema; A Systematic Review” at The Lymphedema Symposium, held at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital on Nov. 4. Contributing authors were Ashley Cox ’17 MS, OT; Jessie Hornberger ’17 MS, OT and Siena Oropollo ’17 MS, OT.

Sarah Masco ’16 MS, OT, presented “The Effect of Exercise on Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema: A Systematic Review” at The Lymphedema Symposium held Nov. 4, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital. Contributing authors were Daniel Panchik, associate professor of occupational therapy; Woodie Hermann ’16 MS, OT and Patrice Zinnakas ’16 MS, OT.

Judy Beck Ericksen, Occupational Therapy, attended and presented at the 23rd-Annual Qualitative Health Research Conference, October 17-19, 2017, in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. Tamera Keiter Humbert, associate professor of occupational therapy and department chair attended and presented at the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Annual Conference, which took place March 30 – April 2, 2017, in Philadelphia. It also was the centennial celebration of the Occupational Therapy Profession.  She presented the paper, “‘Therapeutic Use of Self’ in occupational therapy practice: A historical reflection of the desire for greater connectedness.”

The poster was titled “Safe Patient Handling and Mobility in Occupational Therapy: Current Practices and Moving Forward.”

Bronwyn Keller, MS, OTR/L, and Chris Achenbach were invited by AOTA to provide the Fieldwork Educator Certificate Program. This program was presented to 26 attendees on March 29 and 30.

February 2017

Nicole Brackman, Occupational Therapy graduate student, was selected as a participant for the second annual American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTF) Summer Institute for Future Scientists in Occupational Therapy. The institute is scheduled for Thursday, June 1, 2017, at Boston University. In addition, Brackman will attend the AOTF Occupational Therapy Summit of Scholars June 2-3, 2017. This is an opportunity to engage in mentoring and develop research-centered networks. Brackman earned a highly competitive scholarship to attend these events.

Tam Humbert, associate professor of occupational therapy and department chair, and three occupational therapy alumni Rachel Turkovich MS’15, Kelly Van Clief MS ’15 and Elizabeth VanBuskirk MS’15 recently had a book review published in the journal “Occupational Therapy in Mental Health.”

Summer 2016

Kerri Hample, assistant professor of occupational therapy, and Leah Newman MS’16 presented a poster, titled “Autism, Dietary Modifications, and the Social Participation and Roles of Caregivers: A Comparison Study,” at the 2016 National Autism Conference in State College, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 3, 2016. This presentation was based on Leah’s graduate research project. Of the presenters from all over the United States, only three occupational therapists were selected to share research with behaviorists, teachers, speech language clinicians, parents and consumers.

Tam Humbert, associate professor of occupational therapy, and alums Christine Maley MS’14, Nicole Pagana MS’14 and Christa Velenger MS ’14 had their report, “Dealing with major life events and transitions: A systematic literature review on and occupational analysis of spirituality,” published by American Journal of Occupational Therapy.
