Douglas Bomberger, professor of music, had the third installment of his three-part article on Theodore Presser published in the June/July issue of American Music Teacher, the peer-reviewed journal of the Music Teachers National Association. Presser was America’s leading music publisher of the early 20th century, and he founded the MTNA in 1876. Bomberger’s research was supported by a grant from the Presser Foundation of Philadelphia.
Kyle Kopko ’05, assistant dean for academic achievement and engagement, was the lead author for “Four Variations in Delivery and Design of Mock Trial for the Undergraduate Student,” an article published in the Journal of Experiential Learning.
Oya Dursun-Ozkanca, associate professor of political science and director of the international studies, received a Torch for Global Enlightenment Award for Educators on May 18, 2017, from the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg.
Alexandria Poole, assistant professor of philosophy, was named, by the Center for Community and Civic Engagement, recipient of the 2017 Civic Engagement and Community Based Learning Award for faculty/staff for her “Philosophy of the City and Everyday Life” course. This course includes students from a range of disciplines and explored social and environmental justice as related to the structure of the city and its expression in everyday life.
Nobuaki Takahashi, associate professor of Japanese and Asian Studies, presented “Using Four-Frame Comic Strip for Discussion for Peace: Focusing on the Intermediate Level Oral Production” at the 23rd Princeton University Japanese Pedagogy Forum on May 13, 2017. The presentation was published in the proceedings.
STUDENTS
Kory Hilpmann, senior music major, took first prize in the 2017 Keystone Composition competition, with his piece “Unsettling Seas.” The competition, sponsored by Pennsylvania Music Teachers Association, is a statewide competition and the Young Artist category in which Kory was placed features composers aged 19-25. His award comes with a cash prize and an opportunity for public performance at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in November. Hilpmann studies composition with James Haines, professor of music.
