Dr. Justin Badgerow, associate professor of music, served as an official accompanist at the Music Teachers National Association Eastern Division Competition in Rowan, New Jersey, in February. Also in February, Badgerow adjudicated the Youth (Junior Division) Instrumental Music Competition sponsored by the Lancaster Women’s Symphony Association in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He will perform in recital in the coming months in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and Freeport, Texas.
Dr. E. Douglas Bomberger, professor of music, presented a paper at the annual conference of the Society for American Music in Boston, Massachusetts, on March 10, 2016. His paper, “The Lord God in Boston: B.J. Lang and Edward MacDowell,” discusses the crucial role of conductor Lang in establishing MacDowell’s American reputation during the 1880s.
Dr. Chris Bucher, the Carl W. Zeigler Professor of Religion and Department Chair, was accepted into the Teaching Interfaith Understanding Luce-funded CIC seminar at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. Bucher is one of only 26 faculty members selected for this seminar, which takes place July 31 through August 4, 2016.
Dr. Dan Chen, assistant professor of political science and Asian studies, gave a talk on media criticism and authoritarianism at the Frank Church Symposium at Idaho State University on March 3, 2016.
Dr. Oya Dursun-Ozkanca, Political Science, served as Chair of Complex Peace(s) in the Balkans panel at the International Studies Association annual conference in Atlanta, Georgia. At the conference, she also presented her original research, “Turkey and the European Union in Western Balkans: Strategic Partners or Competitors in Building Peace?”.
Milt Friedly, professor of fine art, exhibited a collaborative work titled, “With You,” in the Demuth Museum’s Invitational, Poetic Paintings. Friedly and poet Deanna Nikaido created a high-type Block print for the show, printed on Friedly’s Noland flatbed press.
Friedly’s sculpture, “Four O’clock Tea II” was included in the Little Sculpture Show at Tribeca Three-Sixty, in New York City, which was part of 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award Ceremony honoring sculptors Kiki Smith and Bernar Venet.
In addition, Friedly’s work, “Hot Dog!” was curated into the show, Safe At Home: A short survey of Baseball Art at the Bedford Gallery, the Lesher Center for the Arts, Walnut Creek, California. The show runs April 3 through June 12, 2016.
Dr. Paul Gottfried, professor of humanities and Raffensperger Chair Emeritus, had his book “Fascism: The Career of a Concept and European history” published by NIU Press. The book has been called “a significant contribution to the fields of political thought and European history.”
Dr. Anne Gross, assistant professor of music, taught a voice master class in Dubuque, Iowa, over spring break for students of Clarke University and Loras College. She also presented a recital of art songs for students and faculty and community members.
Dr. April Kelly-Woessner, professor of political science and Department Chair, wrote a chapter, “The New Left and Political Intolerance” that was published in an edited volume, “In The End of the Experiment: The Rise of Cultural Elites and the Decline of Americas Civic Culture,” by Stanley Rothman. The April 2016 Transaction Press publication was edited by Althea Nagai, Robert Maranto, David J. Rothman and Matthew Woessner.
Dr. Carl J. Strikwerda, College President and professor of history, will be a panelist at the 23rd annual International Conference of Europeanists April 14 through 16. The panel topic is: Democracy and its Discontents.
STUDENTS
Emily Mountain, a senior music therapy student, won one of the three Jenny Shinn scholarships at the regional MAR-AMTA music therapy conference in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in midMarch. The award is the highest student scholarship provided by the region.
