Benowitz and student give presentation
Jean-Paul Benowitz, director of Student Transition Programs and assistant director of Academic Advising with Ginette Slaughter, senior Communications major; gave a presentation entitled “Momentum: An Advising Approach for First Generation Students” at the New Jersey Association of New Student Advocates 4th Biennial State Conference “The College Agenda: It Starts with the First Year,” on Friday, October 25, 2013 in Atlantic City, N.J.
Mock trial team wins award
The Elizabethtown College Mock Trial Team competed in the 6th Annual Happy Valley Invitational Mock Trial Tournament at Penn State University, Oct. 26-27. Elizabethtown placed 9th out of 24 teams and received the Spirit of AMTA Award for outstanding professionalism and sportsmanship. Thirteen colleges and universities fielded teams for the tournament, including American University, Cornell University, Drexel University, Elon University, Georgetown University, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, Lafayette College, Rutgers University, Tufts University, UNC – Chapel Hill, and Penn State University. The team earned two more awards at the Quaker Classic Mock Trial Tournament at the University of Pennsylvania. The team’s awards include a prestigious Outstanding Attorney Award, earned by political science student Ashley Edwards. Edwards earned numerous “top lawyer” rankings, earning one of only a few awards in a field of hundreds of student competitors. The team also brought home an award for best timer, earned by fellow political science student Agnetha (“Aggie”) Serrame.
Debra Wohl, Biology, presented at the North American Primary Care Group Research Conference in Ottawa, Canada on Monday, Nov. 11. Her talk, “A Retrospective Analysis of Intrapartum Antibiotics and Atopic Dermatitis In Children” was co-authored with William Curry, Jennifer Miller, Dave Mauger, and Kaitlyn Tyrie ’11.
Debra P. Hockenberry, Business, is the keynote speaker at the 4th Annual Quantum Ontological Storytelling conference in Las Cruces, N.M. in December. She will speak on: Ultraliminal Innovation – Entrepreneurship, Intrapreneurship and the Quantum Consciousness. She is the author of the chapter: The Alchemist: The First Entrepreneur, published in Cambridge Scholars Press’ book, “Being Quantum in the Age of the Antennarative.”
Kyle C. Kopko ’05, assistant professor of political science and director of the Pre-Law program, gave an invited talk to the Supreme Court of the United States Society at Drexel University’s Earle Mack School of law. Kopko’s presentation was titled, “Policy-Making in the U.S. Supreme Court: October Terms 2012 and 2013.” As part of this presentation, Kopko discussed the policy effects of major Supreme Court decisions and lesser-known decisions, particularly in the areas of patent law, intellectual property, and governmental powers.
Terri Mastrobuono, adjunct professor in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, Division of Theatre and Dance, has been invited to be a guest artist at Capital Area School for the Arts. She will take theatre students there through the process of learning the Italian Renaissance comedy form of “Commedia dell’ Arte” and aid in their creating of an original work based in the art. Her placement is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Artist in Residency Program. Ms. Mastrobuono has been a juried member on the roster of artists for 25 years.
W. Wesley McDonald, professor of Political Science, was quoted in the article “Will Kane Run for Governor?” by Brad Bumsted in The Pittsburgh-Tribune, Nov. 8. McDonald also attended The Sixth Annual H.L. Mencken Club Conference, Nov. 1-2. The topic of the conference was “Decadence.” The conference was held at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, Baltimore, Md.
Ann Marie Potter, lecturer in OT, presented the research poster “Changes in activity and participation resulting in disability associated with metastatic breast cancer” at the Advanced Breast Cancer Second International Consensus Conference (ABC2) in Lisbon, Portugal. The poster was co-authored by Cassie Matyas, BS’12, MS’13, Rachel Hensberger, BS ’12, and Kacey McGuire BS’12, MS’13. The abstract was published in a supplement to the November issue of “The Breast”.

Dawn Spaar, associate dean of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, facilitated training and consulting for administrators and faculty at Broward College, Fort Lauderdale, Fla, titled “Generating Accelerated Programs that Support Student Success”. Spaar also co-presented twice at the 2013 International CAEL Conference in San Diego. She provided a full-day workshop titled: “Building and Growing Accelerated Programs” on Nov. 5 and an “Accelerating Traditional Courses” workshop session on Nov. 7.

Megan DiBernardino, a graduate OT student, and Jennifer Bush, a senior OT student, each received a $1,000 scholarship from the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association (POTA). Students were recognized at POTA’s annual conference and awards luncheon on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013 in Pittsburgh Pa.
Adriana Scotto ‘13, a sociology and pre-law student, is featured in the Jurist Academy Journal. In the journal, she shares her experiences at the Jurist Academy this past summer. Her article can be viewed in the Widener University School of Law Jurist Academy Journal.
Occupational therapy faculty, students, and recent graduates attended and gave various presentations at the annual Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Conference, Nov. 8-9 in Pittsburgh PA. Christine Achenbach, M.Ed, OTR/L (’86) presented a session, “Thyroid Pathology 411 for OT: Do You Know?”. Kacey McGuire (MS, ’13) and Cassie Savitz (MS, ’13) presented a poster, “Metastatic Breast Cancer Impact on Activities and Participation.” The contributing authors were Ann Marie Potter, MA, OTR/L and Rachel Hensberger (MS, ’13). Megan DiBernardino, a graduate student, presented a poster, “Addressing Driving within Occupational Therapy Practice”. Her faculty advisor was Ann Marie Potter, MA, OTR/L. Kerri Hample, OTD, OTR/L represented the PA O.T. licensure board during a panel presentation, “Where Are We Going?”, that focused on professional issues at the national and state level. Debbie Waltermire, MHS, OTR/L (’88), Kristen Chaney (MS, ’13), and Lauren Watt (MS, ’13) presented a poster, “Do Congenital Heart Defects Affect Play & Social Participation?” Elisabeth Sharpe (MS, ’13) was a contributing author.
