“We were excited to be able to host our second annual Chem-a-thon event this year that included a great mix of students from local high schools,” Elizabethtown College Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Amy Defnet said. “We hope this event generated excitement around the field of chemistry and encouraged students to consider scientific careers as they determine what they want to pursue after high school and beyond.”

The day began with an engaging, hands-on laboratory experience in Etown’s state-of-the-art chemistry laboratories in Musser Hall, which were renovated in the summer of 2023. The high schoolers worked with a group of Etown faculty and students to use college-level techniques to complete a chemistry experiment.

Later in the day, students participated in a chemistry-based quiz bowl where they showcased their knowledge, with a chance to win prizes that included a scholarship for each member of the winning team if they choose to enroll at Etown.

The event featured students from seven local high schools (Annville Cleona High School, Elizabethtown Area High School, Linden School for Girls, Manheim Central High School, Muhlenberg High School, Solanco High School, and Warwick High School).

Chem-a-Thon activities took place in the College’s state-of-the-art chemistry laboratories in Musser Hall to facilitate the extensive research- and discovery-based learning activities that are the core of Etown’s Chemistry and STEM curriculum.
