Recently, Elizabethtown College was approved as a host site for a new police academy by the Municipal Police Officers’ Education & Training Commission (MPOETC), Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), and the Office of the Governor.
The growing and successful Elizabethtown College Criminal Justice Program is built on the mission to prepare students for responsible, community-based policing aimed at peace and a curriculum grounded in civil discourse, equity, social justice, and reform. The program currently offers a minor in Municipal Police Officer Training, which is affiliated with MPOETC and a course in Victim Services, which expands on the Church of the Brethren’s call to help victims and those afflicted.
Additionally, a new partnership with Etown’s School of Public Service has been formed with The Department of Justice, where Etown students offer reentry courses to inmates at Camp Hill Prison.
There was overwhelming support from the law enforcement community in both Lancaster and York Counties for Etown to host a new police academy site, the first since 1979, due to the College’s reputation for excellence, service, and integrity. More information will follow regarding the academy and its implementation on campus.
