Elizabethtown College’s Computer Science Program recently became a node (chapter) of The Pledge of the Computing Professional, an organization aimed at promoting the ethical and moral behavior of computing-related degree program graduates as they transition to service-oriented careers.

“Computer Science professionals increasingly wrestle with complex ethical implications of their work such as the impacts of social media and AI,” Elizabethtown College Dean of the School of Engineering and Computer Science, Sara Atwood said. “Through our Educate for Service motto, Etown’s Computer Science program is well-aligned with the Pledge of the Computing Professional, as they emphasize careers of service to society.”

Formed in 2011 and modeled after the Order of the Engineer, The Pledge of the Computing Professional is an organization that promotes computing as a recognized profession at the time of graduation. Computer Science graduates go through a rite-of-passage ceremony and take a pledge to demonstrate moral and ethical behavior as they begin their careers.

Etown Computer Science graduates will receive a unique pin given to all members of the Pledge of the Computing Professional, which spells out the word “honor” in American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) – a character encoding standard for electronic communication. More than 60 higher-education institutions across the country have a node and offer a ceremony for students in their computer science programs.

The first ceremony will be held for Etown’s graduating Class of 2025 in April 2025.
