Elizabethtown College student and internationally-featured genealogy researcher, Eric Schubert ‘23, is sharing his knowledge with the Etown community and beyond through a pair of affordable, online courses. The courses are offered through Etown Edge, Elizabethtown College’s online platform for offering self-paced micro-credentials.
Enrollment is now open for Genealogy Research: An Introduction Course ($99), as well as Genetic Genealogy Research: An Introduction ($249).
Genealogy Research: An Introduction Course is ideal for those just beginning their journey into genealogy research and is offered through a completely online and self-paced course that introduces select basic concepts of genealogical searching. This includes free and paid resources that are available and how to use them, the caveats of family tree building and record searching, and how to understand and take note of context clues while searching.
Genetic Genealogy Research: An Introduction is created for individuals who are curious about the topic of genetic genealogy and want to learn more about its applications. Especially for those who are knowledgeable about traditional genealogy research and now want to branch out, this online and self-paced course introduces select basic concepts of genetic genealogy research and explains how it can be used to solve mysteries such as unknown parentage and unknown grandparent genetic situations.
“From these courses designed for Etown Edge, I hope individuals take away foundational steps detailed within that provide a basis for genealogical searching and family tree building,” Schubert said. “The courses are ideal for those just beginning their journey into genealogy/genetic genealogy research and should serve as a helpful baseline.”
Schubert picked up genealogy at the age of 10 while sick at home and never put it down. Years later, it has inspired his work as a History major and research at both Etown and beyond. As a cold case/genealogy research volunteer, Schubert’s work has drawn national acclaim.
“I appreciate the opportunity and confidence from Etown to create these two courses through Etown Edge,” Schubert said. “Genealogy is such an important and impactful tool, and I think sharing that knowledge is important.”
